NUEW’s Central Council Holds 3rd Regular Meeting

The Central Council of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) held its third regular meeting in NUEW Hall in Asmara on 3-4 February 2004.

In the meeting, the Council commended the people and the government of Eritrea for their proper handling of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission’s verdict. It also called on the international community to apply the necessary pressure on the party (namely, the Weyane government) that failed to abide by the Commission’s ruling, which both parties had already agreed to accept as final and binding.

The Council also commended the dynamic role that Eritrean women are playing in safeguarding national sovereignty and promoting national development .

The Central Council reaffirmed that that the Warsay – Yikealo Development Program has been able to harness the Eritrean resource in an effective way and has paved the path for further development., The relentless efforts of the Eritrean women in general and members of the national service in particular to ensure the success of the campaign, was highly praised. Accordingly, the Council has resolved to give wider opportunities to women and encourage them to participate even more and thus become more productive.

One of the major activities of the NUEW in 2003 addressed the reproductive and general health conditions of Eritrean women. This year the Union will intensify its work in this area by focusing on the fight against such harmful practices as female circumcision, reducing mother and child mortality and will actively engage in the fight against HIV/AIDS, in close collaboration with Ministry of Health. It will also encourage increased participation of women in education, and will step up activities that focus on women’s economic development and poverty alleviation.

The council commended the active participation of women, which reached over 20%, in the election for administration and communal courts. It called upon all Eritrean women to participate with equal enthusiasm in the upcoming regional council elections and prove their competence.

Appreciating the contribution of NUEW’s branch offices in the Diaspora in supporting drought victims, augmenting the Martyr’s Trust Fund and for backing up efforts to construct women’s training centers in different regions of the country, the Central Council, meeting called for continued support to NUEW.

At last the council recommended all the branches of NUEW in the country and abroad to make necessary preparation for the 25 Anniversary celebration of the establishment of the union.

In the meeting the Central Council remembered Ms Medina Nur Ahmed who had served as of the National Council and the Executive Board and Head of NUEW branch in the Southern Red Sea Zone, who passed away due to illness.
