Final Declaration of the 6th Congress of the National Union of Eritrean Women
The 6th Congress of the National Union of Eritrean Women took place from 27 February until 1 March 2003 in Selam Hall of Hotel InterContinental, Asmara, under the theme "Women Make a Difference".
389 women from inside and outside Eritrea took part in the Congress. Among the democratically elected delegates there were 40 representatives of youths/students, while 22 came from abroad. Also present were 18 women who were members of the founding congress of NUEW (honorary founding members).
In the three days of the Congress participants heard and critically debated the 1998-2002 report of the achievements and challenges of NUEW, as well as the Union's Draft Constitution. The Congress has unanimously ratified both documents.
The Congress democratically elected 49 permanent members and 6 reserve members of the Central Council. The Congress has taken into consideration that youths and students should be represented in the Central Council, as they will play an important role in the future of NUEW. Therefore, 7 seats were reserved for youths/students on the Central Council. After their election members of the Central Council held their first meeting and elected Ms. Luul Ghebreab as President of NUEW.
This historic Congress has seen delegates discuss issues that concern women maturely, with dignity, determination and fortitude, and with national unity and integrity in mind.
Considering that the Eritrean people believe in self-reliance, the Congress confirmed its support for the Warsai-Yekealo development program. The Congress declared to be on the side of the Government and people of Eritrea in their efforts to work for peace and unity in the country.
